This is just another instance of how the focus is shifting more towards mental health and better pay among younger generations. While the standard used to be to glorify overworking yourself for little pay or benefits in “burnout culture,” more awareness is starting to be raised about how businesses should treat their employees. Especially after COVID, Gen Z are tired of living in a society that doesn’t pay adequately or value work life balance. This is also reflected in the theatre industry, such as with calls to go down to a 5 day production and rehearsal week, and to pay individuals more for their work. As a society, we are too technologically advanced to not be paying people for their time, and to not have adequate free time. It’s been proven over and over that overworking is bad for your health, and we definitely have the means to not have to do it so much, if the workplace will adjust. That’s why factors like pay transparency are so important and attractive to younger generations.
