Industry Coalition Asks Congress to Break Up LN/Ticketmaster
www.ticketnews.com: A consortium of music-industry groups issued a lengthy statement in the wake of last week’s Senate hearing looking at competition concerns with Live Nation/Ticketmaster and the industry as a whole – and they are asking that steps be taken to break up the industry giant. TicketMaster has become such a behemoth of a monopoly within recent years that it is no surprise that people are looking to the government for assistance. TicketMaster as a platform is a really big issue when it comes to ticket revenue and the fair payment of artists without breaking the banks of fans. It especially becomes a hassle when artists who actively try to avoid having their tickets sold on TicketMaster still end up with tickets being sold on the site thanks to the companies resale category, which especially becomes an issue when ticket scalpers buy an excessive amount of tickets to sell for larger amounts of money second-hand, something that you see a lot not only in the ticket world, but in the collector world as well. Overall, I think that trying to get the government to interfere is one of the best ways of going about solving the issue, even if I do not personally believe they will do much. A company is not specifically allowed to have a monopoly over any specific industry, as we clearly see happening here, however it is not in the best interest of the government to try and stop them, especially when it can be argued that other companies are still somewhat thriving and holding a stake in the industry.
