Tony Mazzo: Masterminding the Complex 30-ft Lift of a Broadway Theater in New York City

Engineering News-Record: When the project team for TSX Broadway—a partial demolition and significant renovation and rebuild of a theater district tower in New York City—wanted to perform a truly challenging feat of engineering, it called in Tony Mazzo at Urban Foundation/Engineering. Project developer L&L Holding Company had a vision for the 110-year-old landmark Palace Theater that required it to be elevated 30 ft within the renovated tower’s footprint to create space for new street-level retail.

I remember talking about this project back in high school in one of my theatre classes, just discussing how crazy and unique it is to raise a theatre up 30 feet into the air- in New York City. You have got the busiest city and a huge project that literally raises a building into the air. The math and engineering behind this project is insane. I don’t have an interest in much engineering but to say that you were a part of a project like this is something to brag about. I’m interested to hear about the internal infostructure of the building, like what moved and shifted inside. Or in, say, 30 years, will the building be collapsing due to this project. Highly unlikely, but with a project that’s never been done before, who knows what could happen. I’m also interested to see if this will become a common thread, raising theatres (or other buildings in NYC) up to make room for retail on the street level.
