IATSE DEI Committee Statement on Tyre Nichols
IATSE: A message from the IATSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee in response to the recently released police footage of the murder of Tyre Nichols by the Memphis Police
I often tell myself that theatre is the leading industry that creates change in the world. This statement from IATSE confirms that belief. The murder of Trye Nichols is devastating and heartbreaking, as yet again the police have taken their power over someone else just because of their racial distance. The statement from IATSE is one that makes me hopeful that the injustices in the theatre community will become more equitable. Although I recognize that change takes time, this statement is a step in the direction that will help propel the world to truly find change, and maybe it will finally help the government realize that there is a change to our justice system that has been needed for a long time. I hope that IATSE members and unions alike will fight for the justice that everyone deserves in every workplace and societal place because as IATSE said, they are members of a labor movement who can and will promote positive change.
