I am very glad to hear that this case is finally getting the attention it has been so badly needing. Ticketmaster having so much control over the live entertainment industry has been very harmful to artists, people who work in the industry, and fans and consumers everywhere. The fact that it is now being brought to congress is an important step in creating change. While we can hope that congress will put limitations on ticketmaster and other similar companies that limits their power and returns control back to the artists and consumers, even it just being brought to congress will hopefully make a change. It is also really good to see that there are members of congress on either side of the aisle coming together to pursue this issue. There are not many issues that bring together both parties anymore so this is another step in the right direction in terms of bipartisan cooperation.
I have been waiting for something like this to happen for years now, like literal years. As an avid concert goer, most of the time when trying to buy tickets I have had to go through Ticketmaster to get tickets for a show I want to go to. However, throughout the years the extra fees and such have just increased and the amount of other options to buy tickets have decreased. So it is really good to see that this is being looked at from a sort of legal point of view now, because I feel like if it is not looked at soon and not stopped if needed then it will just get worse and worse. “It” being the chokehold that Ticketmaster and subsequently Live Nation has over the entertainment industry and ticket sales. I am really interested in seeing what comes of this hearing that this senate committee is holding this upcoming week.
I've always found it interesting how concerts have third-party sellers like Ticketmaster cover their sales. I assumed that the artist would manage that on their own or have each venue cover ticketing as per their regulations and state taxes. It did not occur to me that Ticketmaster had developed a monopoly over the market, but now that I think about it, I cannot name another company that does what they do on a similar scale. I'm also glad to see that it is being studied to improve conditions for consumers and artists. I heard from many of my friends trying to buy Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets about the insane wait times and enormous fees. I also think that the fact so many people wanted the tickets allowed Ticketmaster to abuse their power over the market, and I'm glad someone seems to have noticed and was able to bring it to the senate.
