Broadway musicals, spring 2023: Sweeney Todd, Parade, Camelot …

GoldDerby: We’re now about halfway through the 2022-2023 Broadway season, and there are currently seven productions of musicals (three new, four revivals) set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards?

This year’s Tony season will only be the second since the pandemic and the industry is definitely still recovering. With so many new shows and revivals that have already opened and even more that are opening in the coming months, I can’t wait to see this year’s Tony awards. There are so many amazing shows to see, so many old and brand new actors on Broadway, and so many more people going to the theater. I wish that I was able to see all of them but with so many shows, and especially so many that are popular enough to ensure constant high ticket prices, it’s almost impossible to see even a significant fraction of them. Still, more shows being produced is a good thing because it provides more opportunities to see art and more variety in what you can see on Broadway. I hope that this trend of many new shows continues for a long time to come.

I was very surprised this year when lots of different shows were closing all across Broadway. I was quite upset about it as well because I hadn’t had the chance to go to New York to see the ones that I was most interested in. However, I am hopeful this year I will actually be able to make time to go up to New York to see these different shows live. I specifically want to see Sweeney Todd, especially with Josh Groban, who is an alumnus of CMU. I have never seen Sweeney Todd before either, and so I am excited to see what happens in this show that I have heard so many different crazy things about. I would also love to go see Parade with Ben Platt live. It has been a dream of mine to see Ben Platt perform live, and I know this show would be incredible anyway. I hope I will have time to go up to New York and see most of these new Broadway shows.

It’s always interesting to hear about what the next season of Broadway will look like. We were actually having a conversation about this new season in the studio a couple of days ago as folks noticed how many shows that have been popular - Beetlejuice, Phantom of the Opera, Into the Woods, etc, have been/are closing. While the shows closing right after the holiday rush season is not necessarily surprising, I think the scale of shows that we had heard of closing surprised us - but this new season looks really exciting. Sweeney Todd is the one I’ve heard most about and the cast looks amazing. I remember reading about the tech from Bad Cinderella on the West End - specifically the lights that track packs that the actors wear so maybe that will have some documentation as they open on Broadway. Of course Parade is supposed to be amazing as well, as are the rest of these shows. Generally I’m very excited for this next season! I say all of this knowing that I’ll probably not get out to New York to see these but perhaps! It would be cool to see these shows.
