Why Misty Copeland should be American Ballet Theatre's new director

The Washington Post: American Ballet Theatre’s search for a new artistic director comes at a complicated time, when ballet is facing tough questions. How necessary is the art form to the contemporary moment? Can it draw audiences and funders back in force? Where are the younger, next-generation fans?

I agree with the idea presented in this article. Misty Copeland is an incredibly talented and accomplished artist especially in the world of ballet and she is in the perfect position to offer something new to the American Ballet Theater. Art forms are always changing, and a massive change right now is generational. My generation is growing up and the millennials who came before us are now replacing their elders in leadership roles at art houses across the nation, so they face the question how do we present this art for the new generation. What changes? And, across disciplines the answer has often come down to a change in perspective. We are so used to consuming content made by all sorts of people from everywhere in the world, that in our entertainment industry we don’t naturally accept one sort of person being at the helm of all theater made in the world.
