Review Roundup: AMERICAN BUFFALO Opens On Broadway Starring Darren Criss, Sam Rockwell, and Laurence Fishburne
www.broadwayworld.com: Three small time hustlers want a bigger cut of the American dream. David Mamet's classic about loyalty and greed returns to Broadway more explosive and pointed than ever, exposing a timely American truth: crime and business are two sides of the same coin, under the direction of Neil Pepe (Tony-winning Artistic Director of Atlantic Theater Company).

From what critics are saying about American Buffalo, it seems like there's a conflict on Broadway right now between shows that feel exactly timely and shows that are being put on after a long delay due to COVID. The best argument for it seemed to be that it reveals the dark underbelly of American culture, reflective in a sense of the author himself. I myself don't quite know what to make of it. If you're coming to the theater looking for a quality performance, it seems that there's something to be had here. However, the story itself seems to be lacking. In terms of my own experience, I most often go to a show to hear the story, rather than to see any one actor in particular. So, in that way, the production of this play somewhat highlights the disconnect between Broadway and TV/Film: Broadway may be trying too hard to bring star power to a medium that works fine without it.
