Cars Are Painted Freehand by Professional Pinstripers

www.businessinsider.com: Bill is known as Billy the Brush on TikTok. His page, Str8lines, has over 640,000 followers who tune in to his visually pleasing freehand pinstriping. Pinstripes are a pattern of thin colored lines that run parallel to each other on a car. Bill paints anywhere from 150 to 200 cars per week. Most projects involve painting two lines on a vehicle to add color variety. For each design he uses a variety of brush sizes that allow him to execute the perfect pinstripe.

I used to pinstripe cars all the time when I worked in automotive cosmetics. It was always so therapeutic (and financially lucrative) to do pinstripe jobs on cars (seriously, I literally payed for one of my Spring semesters of college doing so). While I was nowhere near as good as anyone doing this level but it's cool to see people acknowledging the level of skill and technique that the higher end of this type of operation requires.

I'm not much of a car person beyond knowing how to work on them but I always love seeing people that really know their stuff work with cars. There's something awesome about seeing someone take an absolutely destroyed vehicle and restoring it to a state that is indistinguishable from the day it came off the production line.

Also I am like 80% sure they used a voice recorder that transcribed what was being said in this interview because a few instances do not read the way a person would speak.

I will get lost for hours scrolling through videos of people doing this and similar painting jobs like painting sales signs for cars or grocery stores. I think the skill and attention to detail is so incredible and not to mention just satisfying. I always find it so interesting how niche the news page website gets. I find it more interesting how much these people know about such a niche job that I would never even know exists. For someone to be doing such a cool job for at least 15 years is crazy to think about. However, I think there is a good lesson to be learned from this article; as the interview goes on, Bill mentions that he consistently makes mistakes in his work, so it’s quite calming to think about that even “professionals” in a field will still mess up every now and again. It makes me not worry so much about trying to reach my idea of perfection.

This was soooo cool to watch! Logan said it, I could get lost watching this for hours. It is so satisfying to watch, and it is extremely mind blowing to me that this was human produced! The precision and years of practice it must have taken Bill Ahrens is amazing and so respectable. I cannot imagine myself being able to do that, it takes immense talent and hard work to reach this mastery. Especially on a car, before this video I never would have believed that something like this could be done free handed. It seems way to perfect that it can only be done by it being printed on by a machine. Even if this were a sticker it would be hard for me to believe that it was done by hand. I hope that Bill continues to find much success in his art and I wish him all the best. Much respect.
