Pittsburgh Opera – Twice Cancelled “Carmen” is Finally a “Go”
onStage Pittsburgh: Carmen, the perennial favorite; Carmen, the Georges Bizet masterpiece that keeps French opera on the boards as few others in that genre do, will finally hit the Benedum stage next Saturday evening, March 26, for the usual run of four performances. The production was in rehearsal in March 2020, then hoped for (with daily dwindling optimism) for the autumn lineup of the same year. Another rescue – at last – from the COVID crisis, it’s easy to imagine that the production will be a popular draw, just as it’s always been for nearly 150 years.

I know that some of the people here at CMU is part of that show! I think it is so cool to see that there are staff and professors here that are not only teaching theatre but also part of the theatre business here in Pittsburgh as well. I didn’t know that it was cancelled so many times! I wonder then what the process is like for the actors, designers and everyone else involved since I remember in class that once the opening date is set, it is pretty much set no matter what. So, I wonder, was the opening date never set? Was nothing ever made or planned since it got canceled? I wonder what is the process for a canceled show. Either way, I am excited for this show to open and I wish the best of luck to everyone involved. It must have been so hard to have a show you are working on cnceled twice, but it seems like there is enough excitement for it so, I am not too worried! Good luck to Carmen!
This is quite exciting for me. I have never really been able to see an opera. I have of course heard of them and I know that the school of Drama regularly hosts a few operas every year but I have never found the time to watch them this year. I, of course, heard jokes about the ostentatious nature of operas as well as the intensive nature of the technical and management elements of it. So the fact that Carmen is finally back on gives me the opportunity to finally be in the audience for a performance which is very exciting. The constant off and on of whether or not this was going to go on has me really intrigued. I had definitely heard of Carmen before, I think it may be one of the most famous operas of all time but the story of it finally being put on here makes it even more interesting to me.
