Disney's Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser review: Let loose and play

www.cnbc.com: Immersion takes on new meaning aboard Disney’s newest theme park attraction, the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser. From the moment passengers board the shuttles to the Chandrila Star Lines’ starcruiser known as the Halcyon, the adventure begins. And it doesn’t slow its pace until they disembark after the “voyage” two days later.

Once again Disney outdoes themselves! I know, I know, Disney is a problematic company, but whatever your opinion on the fascist mouse is– Disney's Imagineers are perhaps some of the most creative people on the planet. And yea, the seemingly unlimited budget definitely helps. Nevertheless, Disney’s Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser (Dinsey’s news theme park attraction) is gorgeous! Looking at the pictures in the article, I am in awe. What shocks me the most, however, is the execution of the designs. Everything looks sleek and finalized. From the Millennium Falcon, to the datapad used on board by passengers, to the entertainer's costumes, everything is so fascinating. In the words of the author, this new theme park attraction is an immersive experience unlike anything seen before. With storytelling at its core, the Disney corporation has once again pushed the limits of immersion. I mean, they even have Star War-themed cocktails at the Halcyon bar!

Living in Florida for most of my childhood, meant I went to Disney a lot. My parents are big Star Wars fans, and it feels like I have been waiting for this immersive Star Wars hotel project to be complete for years. Right off the bat, hearing about it in 2019, I knew it was going to be super cool. Most things Disney does is very cool, honestly. Despite the fact that I don’t really intend on working for Disney, I do think being exposed to things from the technical aspects of the theme parks and being exposed to Imagineers at a young age through various programs impacted my decision to become a designer. I am actually writing this with the intention of taking a workshop at USITT tomorrow on the design process and storytelling process for Walt Disney Theme parks with an Imagineer. I am really excited to pick his brain on the Star Wars project.

If I had the money for this, you would never see me again. I would spend all of my time at the Galactic Starcruiser and I am not even kidding. Star Wars is one of my favorite pieces of pop culture, and frankly the one I know in most detail. From the first addition of the new Star Wars section to the parks through now, I have been dying to go. Funny enough, I am from Florida but I just never have the funds or means to go. Personally, I am starting by talking about the price because it is just so difficult to get past. $1,200 per person per day is absolutely ridiculous if you are someone like me…or really most people. Putting that aside, the actual attractions, restaurants, and hotel genuinely look like so much fun. The fact that you can immerse yourself into the universe and even align with characters for this adventure is so cool and I hope that with more demand, prices begin to lower. If not, I will start saving up right now.

The things this company, the painfully absolute pinnacle of capitalism, has been able to create and achieve is nothing short of impressive. The creativity of Disney is something that will always blow my mind, and this massive Star Wars cruise, hotel, interactive theater production mashup is no different. The scale of this entire experience is immediately such an extraordinary factor to consider; the article says this Starcruiser has been in development since 2016, which honestly makes a lot of sense considering the detail and extensiveness of the whole thing. It sounds like the ultimate Star Wars fan’s dream. From the living spaces to the playable missions to the food, it looks so easy to become completely immersed in this make believe world. This ability to almost live in another reality must be such an unreal experience; I am not even a Star Wars fan and I want to go and visit this place myself.
