Unpacking the Milwaukee Packout 2 Wheel Cart and Customizable Worktop

Home Fixated: Milwaukee is on a roll now, literally. Their newest release is the #48-22-8415 PACKOUT 2-Wheel Cart. Also released recently is the #48-22-8488 PACKOUT Customizable Worktop. In the ongoing war of modular storage systems between the major tool manufacturers, Big Red keeps firing salvos of innovation. In this slightly reformatted Tool News Nirvana, we’ll learn more about these two new releases, what they mean for productivity, and how they fit in with the rest of the PACKOUT™ ecosystem.

Okay so did Milwaukee just slap a piece of MDF on a lid AND DECIDE TO CHARGE $50 FOR IT? I love their products, don't get me wrong, but this is getting to be a tad ridiculous. Personally, my favorite worktop station is a curtain hamper, it just so happens to be the perfect height for a standing desk (for me at least)! There are so many ways to get more creative than this. For $50 you could probably buy a folding table and slap some MDF or Maso on top and have a portable workstation with 16 times the surface area! At some point, you have to stop relying on manufacturers and suppliers providing tools, jigs, workstations, etc. and figure out how to create a system that works best for you and your workflow. I remember working with a theatre company that had an old folding table with threaded inserts and wood blocks that was used as a miter saw bench, and it was fantastic! It's like the stock 4x8 platform debate: is there a reason other than the manufactured plywood size that 4x8 is the standard? At the end of the day, do what works best for you and your workflow, but don't let a manufacturer be the only reason for it.

I have been pretty interested for a while now in Milwaukee's packout line. I think it is a solid solution to tool transportation and storage, if on the expensive side. That said, it doesn't look like this release is actually anything new, despite the author's claim that this is another 'salvo of innovation' from Big Red. I do like the new vertical storage for longer tools, though. It is kind of similar to the storage I have seen for legs on platform carts, which have much the same problem in terms of storing long and narrow objects. Like Elliot, I am also fairly frustrated with the worktop accessory. It really does feel like they slapped down a little piece of MDF and called it a day. I like that appears to be easily changeable, but I wish that Milwaukee would have applied some of their innovative design practices here. Why not take a cue from road cases, and make it strap to the side and flip up? Or perhaps fold out like a Monopoly board? With an asking price of $50, I don;t feel that anyone is getting the best value out of their dollar.

Wow this looks really useful actually. I think I could see myself getting this and keeping it set up in my shop like this one day. As a job site workbench/ toolbox though this seems even more incredible! I would really like to get one of these. The different attachments make it seem really versatile and user friendly. I love the mobile work top, because in any on site job I have done, that has been the hardest thing to find. Sawhorses or truck beds can only get you so far when you have projects that require more detail or accuracy. Having a mobile work surface like this around would be super useful in those situations, or for looking at drawings, writing cut lists, etc. The fact that it is also a functioning hand truck is just great to me too. That is the perfect blend of a multi functional tool. What a smart idea.
