Audience Development – Empowering Youth Through Theatre: Theatre Not Only For, But With the Youth

I think a youth council is a great influence to have in any program, if people really are worried that the youth participates less in theater nowadays. It is not like theaters would be handing off authority to children- the speakers in the article are all older teens that are informed enough to make decisions on behalf of their younger peers. A youth council would also spurn progressiveness, as in the article they talked about a demand for accessibility and diversity. The prospect of a youth council addition in a company could honestly break down the exclusivity of the theater industry as a whole as it would encourage the next generation to step up to the plate if their needs and wants were truly being listened to and fulfilled. Unfortunately, I feel as though this is an unrealistic expectation for the industry as a whole as it seems bent on preserving its exclusivity.
