Kengo Kuma Wins Library Design with Beautiful Timber Proposal

mymodernmet.com: An elegant curvilinear proposal that blends into the existing landscape has been chosen as the final design for Ibsen Library in Skien, Norway. Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, Mad Arkitekter, and Buro Happold Engineering, the project impressed the jury with its porous perimeter and bright open spaces.

I do not know much about Henrik Ibsen for whom this library is to be named after, but this design is stunning. It has beautiful qualities to it and from what I gather it has the same feeling to that of Ibsen’s works. The timber look with the glass face is beautiful and really unique in a library. It has a warmth and cool to it during the winter and definitely promotes what A library space should feel like. It has a very quite nature to it. I do wonder if the use of so much wood will cause unnecessary amplification of sound. The Hunt library on Carnegie Mellon Universities Campus has this attribute where the floor creates un-dampening sound that the ceiling in particular amplifies as you walk around. Otherwise this also feels like it will fit right in with Norway in terms of innovative quality and style as well as atmosphere and functionality.
