Spotlight on Black Broadway Producers: Richard Gay

Playbill: Two words: Soul Train. They instantaneously conjure joyful images of music, dance, and Black culture. Richard Gay plans to deliver on that brand—a brand he’s been managing for years—when he brings Soul Train to the Broadway stage as a lead producer.

I remember when I first heard about bringing a Soul Train show to Broadway and thinking, wow, that makes so much sense. It's already a property that inherently includes music. Soul music seems to be a perfect genre for musical theater too, because it includes a lot of the same emotional and story-telling elements. It is also a great chance to bring a talented group of black creatives together. It's also really cool that Richard Gay has already been managing the Soul Train brand for a few years, so he probably knows a lot about it. Soul Train was a way for young black artists to get their start during the time that it was airing, so it seems very full circle that black artists working on this show will gain notoriety from it. As someone interested in theater design, I can't help but mention how amazing Soul Train's set is and how awesome it would look on a Broadway stage, and of course I love some 70s clothing. I'm really excited to see how Soul Train progresses through its production, and what else Richard Gay brings to Broadway.

I am very excited to see what Richard Gay brings to the Broadway scene. Looking at his credits, it seems like he will bring a new perspective to the producing world and I would love to see where it goes. I hope that his musical Soul Train does well as it sounds like something completely different from any other broadway show that I have ever seen. Post pandemic, we will need more of these groundbreaking musicals to help attract audiences back to Broadway and from what I have heard the musical Soul Train could be just the thing. I would also be curious to know about the other black broadway producers that have been showcased in the spotlight series. I am also happy to see that Soul Train has the first all black female creative team. I think this musical is a step in the right direction for broadway.

I haven't heard of Soul Train, but I am very eager to see how Richard Gay progresses through the Broadway world with this! I believe that this highlight of black artists through cultural music and dance is an important way of continuing the appreciation of black lives and history. Especially after decades of oppressing and denying black lives on this land, I believe art is a key factor in bringing lives together as one. I believe that Richard Gay is making ground-breaking steps in history as he is bringing such a rich culture into the broadway scene. On top of that, I believe that it is great that Playbill is highlighting his work like this! Especially in the midst of a pandemic while there was an explosion in the black lives matter movement earlier this year, these are the progressive and effective steps necessary to take in order to not only claim the culture but also share the love of it to the world in a peaceful way.
