Saving Culture and Creativity Without Compromising Their Best Interests

Butts In the Seats: Very big THANK YOU to friend of the blog Rainer Glaap who sent me a link to an UNESCO document, Culture in crisis: Policy guide for a resilient creative sector. At this point I think I am going to approach this document over the course of multiple entries because there is so much I see to talk about. At 56 pages, it probably isn’t comprehensive but the suggestions it makes are well-considered. UNESCO proposes three different areas in which governments can take action to support the culture and creative industries in light of the impact Covid has had upon them: 1 – Direct Support for Artists and Cultural Professional; 2- Support for Sectors of the Cultural and Creative Industries; and 3- Strengthening the competitiveness of the cultural and creative industries.

It might have taken a couple of clicks to get to the full report but it was cool looking through UNESCO's document. I have been following SMU Data arts and more American non-profit performing arts specific information and it cool looking at how these differ from something with a wider spin and broader geographic scope. I think also it is interesting looking at government intervention. It seems as though we might start needing to roll out the alphabet soup of agencies like FDR did after the great depression to get things and running and people bringing home paychecks, especially now that we will have a president who will listen to scientists and states imposing stay at home orders again. I don’t think anything that I looked out for is especially earth sharing as Joe Patti writes 56 pages aren’t really enough to get an in-depth look but it was nice to see written out. Though I haven’t really been following all the packages and fights for a CARES ACT II as closely as I should, it seems like what the United Nations is putting forward seems in line with the snippets of speeches and articles, I have heard/read.
