'Our Work Is Just Starting': 12 LGBTQ Artists Talk America's Future Under Biden-Harris

Billboard: On the evening of November 7, 2020, president-elect Joe Biden made American history during his victory speech. “I am proud of the coalition we put together, the broadest and most diverse in history,” he said. Biden acknowledged different political ideologies, ages, races and demographics and then thanked his supporters who identified as “gay, straight, transgender.”

I love the title of this article, and I am hopefully optimistic about the content. I think the fact that Joe Biden acknowledged the transgender community in his acceptance speech was an awesome moment that will hopefully be a turning point. His election was a huge turning point in general. The fact that the Biden-Harris administration has the most comprehensive LGBTQ platform is awesome, and I’m excited to see it put into action. I don’t love that this article took so freaking long to get to the interviews, cause the title feels kind of misleading. Also, why don’t any of these artists have bios? I would love to know about who you interviewed and why. Sometimes these articles really don’t do well. HA! I said that because I didn’t know the first person they chatted with but the second person is Billy Porter… and I definitely know who he is. I think what he said is so freaking important. 70 million people voted for Trump. That cannot be ignored.

I think that the last four years and in particular the last six months have really shown how much trickles down from the government and bleeds into everyone's daily life through rhetoric and through policy. What the President says matters and how he treats the LGBT community matters. I have full faith in Joe Biden that he will spend the next couple years not only cleaning up the mess Trump has made in terms of LGBT rights and culture, but I think he'll do right by the community. What really counts for me though is completely the rhetoric that comes out of his mouth, I think that his level of compassion and care is something that that people take for granted but when dealing with issues that are both political and highly personal, I think that his warmth and his genuine empathy will shine through. I think that its easy to doubt Joe Biden, but I'm of the belief that he's one of the realest people in Washington and treats the country with the same love and respect that he treats his family. I hope that his presence in the White House gives us some peace during these next four years.

I agree. Biden and Harris getting into office isn’t the cure, panacea, for all of our problems. It’s honestly just a step in the right direction. I’m glad we have conquered the Trump prerogative, but now it’s time to move forward with a bigger and grander change. Change isn’t made in a day with an election, it’s made over months and years of work, speaking out, bravery, and individuals actions and changing of opinions of people. Biden and Harris getting into office was a great thing, and an even more amazing thing to get Trump out, but them winning isn’t the savior for our country, not by a long shot.

I chose to comment on this article because I am so relieved to have a healthy, functioning administration again and I am excited that the next president in office not only acknowledges the transgender and queer communities but works to protect and include it. I am aware that no politician is perfect, but I believe that Joe Biden will put our country back in the right direction and remove the anit-LGBT sentiment that our current administration has. I think it speaks volumes that most everyone in the article uses the word “relieved” when discussing the results of this election. The trump administration was so harmful and toxic that we can all finally let out a collective sigh of relief and the roll up our sleeves and go back to work. I hope to see an America that protects all of its citizens, including the trans community, and so I am eager to have a president who will help make that America a possibility.
