Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Revives Broadway for a Day
The New York Times: Broadway may be dark for several months to come, but actors from four shuttered shows have been given the opportunity — a rare one during the coronavirus pandemic — to put on their costumes and perform. The venue: Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I think it’s really cool that the Thanksgiving Parade is being used as an opportunity to showcase artists who have had their shows shut down and have been out of work for a while. This parade is such an integral part of American culture in my opinion and I didn’t even think about the fact that it would not be a good idea to pack hundreds of thousands of people to watch this parade. I’m glad that these Broadway performers will get to return to some sort of stage, and I’m also glad that safety conditions are an absolute priority. It will be interesting to see some of these shows I think without the massive ensembles, but it will definitely be good for morale. I think to some extent we are getting better at doing things virtually, so it’s nice to see that this parade will still happen despite everything going on in the world.
I completely agree that it is really cool that the parade this year will in part showcase artists who have been out of work during this shutdown. And I am so glad a few Broadway shows are getting the change to perform. I cannot imagine how excited these performers are to perform a song from their show after so many months of not being able to. It sounds like they are taking all of the necessary COVID precautions with getting everyone tested and staying distant and in masks. Although I do think there is some risk here so I hope everyone is able to stay safe and healthy. I think it is great that they are including people who were set to perform in other parades in NYC that were canceled due to the pandemic. It really shows a sense of community which is something I did not expect to see from such a corporate organization.
I am so excited for the parade! In this crazy world its so comforting to know that one of country’s favorite and most treasured traditions is still going to happen, even if it may not look like the usual parade we all know and love. The fact that four Broadway shows are able to perform at the parade doesn’t even seem real to me, it almost feels too good to be true! Its so amazing to know that these actors will get the chance to perform again on one of the biggest stages in the world, even though they still can’t perform on their home stages. It’s also exciting to know that so many technicians, production staff members, and choreographers were employed to work on the show again as well to help modify it to fit with both the parade and COVID guidelines. I can’t wait to watch these performances on the silver screen and see theatre shine again during these really trying times.
As with every year, I am very much looking forward to the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade this year. I am interested to see how "different" it feels for me. Seeing that it is not usual for me to be there in person, will the fact that I am watching it on TV feel normal? I am so glad that all the people involved with making the parade a reality were able to find a way to make it happen. For all of us who watch it on TV every year, this is one thing to bring back a little sense of normalcy to our lives. At this point, their isn't much you can do without any risk. At a certain point, you have to take the small risk in order to begin to bring us closer to being able to be back where we were. This will hopefully be one event to help kickstart the entertainment industry back into motion.
This opportunity for theatrical actors, especially those on broadway, is so enlightening to me. First of all, I am so glad that the Macy's parade will only be on one block with no audience (we'll see how that goes though). People were making a big deal about this a few months ago, but I think that the general population and fans of the parade already watch it on television. And given that it is being broadcasted, I think that this is an amazing way to showcase the talents of these broadway performers. Seeing as broadway most likely will not be back until 2022, I strongly believe that these are the measures and innovative ways we need to think of incorporating talented theatrical performers back into our entertainment. Obviously, there is no way of bringing in the live in-person performance experience, but especially with something as big as the Macy's parade, it may broaden broadway's audience and attract new fans.
