Phylicia Rashad is part of 'new dawn' at August Wilson Cultural Center

I'm really happy that this center has finally gotten it's feet under it, because it represents a part of the arts world that is very underrepresented. Pittsburgh is one of the only places I've been with so much pride associated with it, and so many museums and cultural projects and university buildings named after local influential people. The most I've ever seen is a street or a statue, so the fact that almost every building in Pittsburgh has some famous name attached is actually really uplifting, because you're constantly reminded of what you could do based on what has been done all around you. One aspect of this cultural community that is rarely discussed is the history of The Hill District and August Wilson's legacy. To many, it is an embarrassing history, so it's not celebrated, but that also means that black history is pushed to the side, and so is August Wilson. I hope that this "new beginning" will help to change that, and bring this history back.
