Paint Off: NFR vs FR
Guild of Scenic Artists: A common question we see pop up from Scenics is ‘What is the difference between painting on NFR and FR muslin, and why would you choose one over the other?’ That question is often answered with a resounding chorus of veteran Scenics yelling “DON’T USE FR!”. Flame Retarded (FR) muslin has a long history of being cranky to work with and harder to paint, and thus many Scenics would rather paint on Non-Flame Retarded (NFR) muslin and take the time, in the end, to properly apply a flame retardant.

This was a very informative article for me because I had never really thought of the material different between FR and NFR muslin, i have really only thought about it in terms of pricing. If anything, I think this article slaps you with the talk to the paint charge and take their preference into account mentality and if at all possible let them make the decision it’ll make you happier in the long run. It was great to go step by step through the article and see how the different stages of the process evolved vs the end product. I know if I had seen the end product in isolation, I probably would’ve been like what’s the big deal it looks almost identical but there is so much more that goes into it than that. The workability of the material and the fact that to make it look presentable you may remove the desirable properties you bought it for in the first place. Now I know to not make the mistake of trying to help make the charge artists life easier in an uninformed purchasing decision.
