Lear deBessonet, of Great Faith

The Interval: Eleven-year-old Lear deBessonet had a plan for what grown up Lear deBessonet was going to do with her life. She was going to start a theatre company in Russia. Not just any theatre company. A Christian theatre company. In Russia. The year was 1991. She had received some misinformation about Russia.

A remarkable fixture in this theater company is having information cards that the staff are required to know. A past stage manager of mine would have a book of all the chorus members, principal singers, supers, actors, and anyone else involved in the show. There would be a photo with a name and any other important information next to it, and while she was required to know it, she would encourage me and the other PA to also memorize it. She would always remind me, "They like it when you call them by their name," and so I would learn their names and it made for a better, and more friendly communication between me and the many other people there. I can relate a lot to Lear deBessonet and her own drive for creating theater. She comes from a similar childhood background, and it's actually quite inspiring to read about her optimism and positive outlook on people, and how different people approach the arts; but more so the writer of this article itself wrote a very interesting, personal piece, and as I got to the end, when they were writing about suspension of disbelief I completely agreed with them about how faith is very hard, because it goes against everything we know, so to see it ever present in deBessonet is truly remarkable.
