How I Got Here: Punchdrunk founder Felix Barrett
Creative Review: Punchdrunk is best known for turning disused spaces into theatrical playgrounds – creating immersive shows where audiences can explore lavish sets and watch as plays unfold around them. Over the past two decades, it has become one of the world’s most talked about theatre companies, putting on sellout productions in London, New York and Shanghai and earning rave reviews, awards and a cult following in the process.

As someone who passionately love immersive theatre, I was super excited to see this article up on the Blog this week. I got to intern at Sleep No More while in high school, but as far as Punchdrunk is concerned, I know very little about the company. I think there is a different value to site specific performances that Punchdrunk has obviously been able to harness. The fact that Punchdrunk has a published encyclopaedia of their work, speaks volumes of the quantity and quality they’re able to obtain and achieve. I think it’s interesting that Barrett was focused on observing ways to break the norms of theatrical performance as a young child. Immersive theatre feels like a mixture of Virtual Reality and watching a movie or a show. I think Barrett has a strong understanding of theatre and how to make a strong, interesting, theatrical immersive piece. The success of Punchdrunk speaks for itself on some level.
