Elizabeth Bonesteel on the connecting power of virtual reality

The Verge: In Elizabeth Bonesteel’s story, “Overlay,” a family works their way through a top-secret facility on an important mission. As they sneak past guards and drones, it soon becomes clear that their mission isn’t what it seems, culminating in a touching moment about connection.

Bonesteel is known for her Central Corps series (The Cold Between, Remnants of Trust, and Breach of Containment), which follows the members of a Federation-like space consortium as they deal with a looming conspiracy.

I am just speechless. What a moving story and article. The idea of using Virtual Reality in such a way as she portrays it in her story is phenomenal as the sweet and emotional short story really moves the audience. However, while the story is quite great, the idea behind VR and its potential multitude of uses is currently out of our understanding and something like what is shown is quite possible. Virtual Reality is one of those things that really has potential and can really be phenomenal but also very impactful as is seen in Ready Player One. I am quite interested to see where Virtual reality ends up but, in the meantime, this article highlights an interesting possibility. Virtual Reality could actually end up as seen in the short film and could be worth it. It might not be as used in the exact scenario but using it to connect with family or other members could be a whole new world that is unlike anything we can achieve now. Attempts have been made the biggest one being social media which ended up connecting us but only in a competitive and less meaningful way. Video games have tried that as well with multiplayer teams that are designed to only work when you work together but have failed, like in rainbow six siege. An untapped world of connecting to people is awaiting and VR could be the answer.
