2018 Study Shows Increase in Diverse Leads

The Mary Sue: Dr. Stacy L. Smith of the the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative recently released a study on the 100 highest-grossing films of 2018, and they showed a marked improvement, even though some of the numbers still show room for improvement. This year, 40 films featured a woman in a co-lead or leading role, up from 32 films in 2017. Of those films, 11 featured a woman of color in those roles, which is nearly triple the number from 2017.

Articles like this make me happy. It is really exciting to see the amount if diversity in casting that is happening today. Having a diverse cast is now a good thing, and it wasn't before. It is really interesting to watch "Mamma Mia!" and "Mamma Mia! 2" because you can see the difference in casting the ensamble. There really isn't much to do about the leads seeing as they are the same actors, but the ensamble is very different. There are so many people of color and it is exciting to see them exist in this world that they very much can and do exist in. The first movie is very white which honestly kind of surprises me now that I think about it. I hope that there are more movies to come with even broader changes from originals because there is something about seeing someone that reflects you on screen that makes you happy.
