The Vertical Dance Projections of Substratum

www.livedesignonline.com: During Substratum, a 25-minute show, five aerialists danced across the side of a building, weaving through realtime projections along the massive canvas. Full Tilt produced and choreographed this vertical dance performance with video content designed and created by Limbic Cinema and a soundtrack produced by Lu Records.

Substratum looks like an incredible show. The idea of vertical dance is not completely new, but the mix of media and choreography in a “floating” performance is compelling and astounding. What’s really amazing is the amount of work and control it takes to put on a show like this. By hanging the performers in air, they have to contend with gravity, wind, and other factors beyond their control to perform not only to the media design, but with it. The media design looks beautiful, especially with the movement of humans. It looks as if they’re manipulating the projections even though it is really well timed out and well-planned design. I also love that media design is becoming so mainstream. We all know about basic projections, but the way this in combined with dance and the adrenaline of vertical dancing brings new light and hopefully new interest into the world of media design.

I wish I could’ve seen the entire twenty-five minute performance of Substratum because that short video clip looked so cool. The video projection onto the building while having aerialists rigged off the side of a building is impressive and beautiful. I wonder what the type of preparation for an event like this would be. I also wonder about safety precautions considering that they had aerialists with props (those umbrellas in the video!) hanging off the side a building doing tricks. In addition, I think that Limbic Cinema Projections did a great job. One thing Larry spoke to us about last semester was spectacle projections vs utilitarian projection, and I think the projections in this performance were necessary in the completion of this show. They created a story for the audience to view surrounding the aerialists while they did their stunts. It made the performance of Substratum more interesting and more cohesive.
