L.A. Teachers Strike: Teamsters Urged To Honor Picket Lines As Hollywood Jump In

Deadline: Teamsters Local 399 is urging its members to honor the striking Los Angeles teachers’ picket lines, which could disrupt plans for filming on campuses at local schools, which have long been favorite locations for film and TV shoots. “Honor the picket line!” the union says on its website.

I will never stop being amazed by how strong some unions are in this country such as the Teamsters, IATSE, AEA, and teacher unions while the government can be so extremely anti-union, most recently seen with the Janus supreme court case decision earlier this year. This article is one of those perfect examples of how strong some unions are in this country as well as showing that unions stick together. This is shown when the article talks about WAG, IATSE, SAG, and other unions joining into the picket lines with the teachers. What I found most surprising by this article is the mixed message the Teamsters have about not being able to join the picket line but having to honor the picket line. This mixed message makes sense from a money-making standpoint but seems to have one union weakening another union. The union told not to join the picket line seems to be limiting the work of the other unions.

It is incredibly imperative that all unions stand with teachers on this one because there is so much more at stake than a show or some concert, this strike is about protecting the well being and civil rights of every student in the LAUSD. Recently when I was at home in Los Angeles, I was urging all my family members with children that are still in LAUSD schools to take the high road and not send their kids to school during the strike because I am not a scab. One of the most striking images in this article is the one with the Writers Guild of America holding up the sign that says "teachers taught me how to write". This quote perfectly captures why every union should get out there and strike for teachers -- because they teach us everything. I really do believe that crossing the picket line in this case is deplorable, comes off rather ungrateful, and is incredibly disrespectful to one of the most hard working and thankless professions out there.

I think this strike is well over due and rightfully so having been a student within the LAUSD system my entire life. I saw from an early age faculty and staff being cut, property and other resources being run down, destroyed, and lost because of lack of money and only getting worse as I went through schooling till, I graduated from high school. The teacher I met along the way did more than they should ever be required to make up for the LACK OF EVERYTHING. They taught very important material and gave me knowledge I value more than I can even begin to describe. They shouldn’t have to work in the conditions they do; they shouldn’t have to make up for the fault that isn’t their own; and they definitely deserve more for everything they have already been doing. This article highlights the problem but also informs that other unions are supporting and respecting the strike and picket lines. I only wish more unions would join in and really support teachers to solve this problem.
