Union seeks money from August Wilson Center

Pittsburgh Business Times: Potential foreclosure isn't the only problem facing the August Wilson Center for African American Culture.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 3 is seeking to get back money owed to the union on behalf of August Wilson Center employees who are union members. It wasn't clear how much what owed.

It seems that with the recent news of its foreclosure, more and more financial issues about the August Wilson Center are coming to light. This causes me to wonder about the underlying financial issues of many Pittsburgh theatre companies. Although the August Wilson Center may have had it worst, I am sure it is not the only organization of its kind with what could perhaps be a lengthy history of debt. I also wonder if it is being used as a bit of an example in the area. The fact that it is being so highly publicized leads me to believe that it could be a warning to other companies owing money. Even if it was not intended this way, it should certainly still serve as one to anybody experiencing similar financial struggles.

Well it is truly sad to see the August Wilson Center going through such trying times. I have been following their financial situation and they are definitely not in the position to pay IATSE members their dues right now. However, it is nice that Local 3 isn't making any harsh demands right now, as far as I can tell from the article, seeing as the Center is in the middle of a debate for foreclosure. Yes, union members should be paid, otherwise what is good is it being part of a union? However, it would be nice if maybe Local 3 could see how thing's pan out at the bank before making further demands.

It is indeed sad that the August Wilson Center is facing such financial trouble. I completely understand why Local 3 is seeking their due payments. However, I am also impressed that Local 3 is being so understanding of the August Wilson Center while they handle their foreclosure hearings in Court. Similar to Kassondra, I wonder how many other arts organizations in Pittsburgh are struggling financially. I imagine that many arts organizations have difficulty financially. I wonder if there was anything the August Wilson Center could have done in order to prevent such drastic debt, and if they had an employee who was in charge of handling their finances. I think that the situation with the August Wilson Center goes to show how crucial it is to handle finances in a responsible and realistic way.
