Olney Theatre to offer nine plays in three ‘mini-seasons’ next year

The Washington Post: Jason Loewith, Olney Theatre Center artistic director, has a plan. It is “either a brilliant idea or a disaster in the making,” he said. “We’ll see!” The game plan: Instead of a traditional season for 2014, Olney will offer three “mini-seasons” with three productions in each. Next year will see the Contemporary Series (“Avenue Q,” “Colossal,” “I and You”), the Family Series (“Once on This Island,” “The Little Mermaid,” “The Tempest”) and the Classic Series (“The Piano Lesson,” “Awake and Sing!,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”).

I'm interested to see whether this model of season selection works for the Olney. It seems like a good and innovative way to get more people to come to see the shows and get them interested. By having a wide variety of shows catered to certain demographics it's a good way to get people not normally interested in the theatre to come. I like the fact that Mr. Loewith has admitted that this will "either be a brilliant idea or a disaster in the making." Because anytime you try something innovative there is always the risk of it blowing up in your face. Hopefully trying this won't ruin the company in the future. But I think it's a good idea in theory and it might be a good way for regional theatres to pursue in the future.
