Businesses profiting as thousands find rubber ducky irresistible
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: All that is inside the 40-foot-tall rubber duck by Point State Park is a fan to keep it inflated. But from the hundreds of thousands of happy onlookers it has drawn over the past week -- and the lightened wallets left in their wake -- it might as well be hiding a giant, cartoon-sized magnet.

This is really cool. I have always found the economics of entertainment fascinating. I love to see how people justify spending money on entertainment events and to what extent are they willing to do so. This also includes the extra expenses (dinner, taxis, etc.). This however is not something I really find myself wanting to see. I mean, it's interesting, but its not like the duck does anything. It just sits there. And as the article pointed out, it is just a fan on the inside. I would even go down to see it if they projected movies on it! I am so happy for the Pittsburgh area businesses, but I wish it was for something a little more exciting.
It's funny how something so (seemingly) trivial can bring people together. This is a great example of a business decision that is bringing people together in the right place at the right time. I've noticed that the locals here in Pittsburgh are very proud of their city and anything that represents it. This duck has somehow become tied to the Pittsburgh pride, and in return, the duck's popularity is doing great things for local business owners and arts organizations. I hope this brings in business for the Cultural Trust, and has served as a way to inform more locals about the work that the Trust does throughout the year. Also, I had never visited Point State Park before, so I didn't realize that this was a grand re-opening of sorts for the park. The duck is a great way to bring people to the park and show them what it has to offer, so I hope the park sees many visitors coming back for a visit, even after the duck has moved on from Pittsburgh.
I've been working for the company responsible for delivering the merch to the tent set up by the duck. Please calm down. Stop buying so much. I'm tired.
