Actor Billy Porter takes center stage at home

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The always dapper Mr. Porter was at the Philip Chosky Theatre on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University on Monday, a return engagement to the place where the Pittsburgh native honed his craft as a student and gave back as an instructor. The toast of Broadway is spending his day off this week as the toast of Pittsburgh, where he met with CMU students and, before a reception at his other alma mater, Pittsburgh CAPA, he was welcomed by Primanti's in its original Strip District site with a special sandwich -- a double serving of fried kielbasa topped with coleslaw, tomatoes and fries.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Billy Porter speak at CMU. It is always inspiring to hear successful alumni discuss their lives, and the struggles and successes they have faced since graduation. Billy gave some really insightful advice that I found relevant to all disciplines in the CMU School of Drama. When I graduate and begin working in the field, I know that I will always remember the conversation I witnessed with Billy Porter here at CMU. I am also happy that the city of Pittsburgh made a point to honor Billy in such an extravagant and meaningful way. Billy is not only an extremely talented and successful Pittsburgh native, but he is also a Pittsburgh enthusiast. He is someone who has not forgotten his roots, which cannot be said for every Tony award winning actor out there. I could tell that Billy is very appreciative of where he grew up, and of the education he received here at CMU.
