This 'Stranger Things' Season 5 Theory Says the Broadway Play Spoiled the Ending
Business Insider: "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" opened on London's West End in December 2023 before moving to Broadway in April 2025. Playwright Kate Trefry, who is also a writer on the Netflix series, described the play as the "missing puzzle piece" in the show's official narrative.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow took on a difficult challenge; to create an interesting show that brought the audience into the lore of the hit show Stranger Things without revealing enough to leave digital viewers out of the loop. Stranger Things is a mystery thriller that has gained traction worldwide and many people enjoy theorizing what each moment means to predict what is truly happening in the town of Hawkins. Due to the immense fanbase every detail matters and creating a part of the story through a play causes many viewers to miss out on what could be pivotal information. Throughout the article they mention that the play has been described as the “missing piece” to figuring out how the finale episode will play out. But due to the play only being performed on Broadway and the West End many fans have been unable to see the show. So that brings us back to the question of what information are they actually able to reveal throughout the play while not compromising the global viewership of the Netflix series? Now that the final episode has aired the Duffer Brothers proved they were able to create an engaging experience through placing the play before the timeline of their hit Netflix series without compromising the understanding of Stranger Things as a whole.
I had the privilege of getting to see Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Broadway, and I was absolutely blown away by it for many reasons. For one, the show seemed very self-aware in its role to promote season five of the show Stranger Things, and I appreciate when media knows and leans into its purposes (and this show did that well with both marketing and spectacle). But to be honest, a lot of the references flew over my head, as someone who had only seen the very first episode and knew only some key plot points beyond that. The writer did a great job of balancing exposition to audience members like myself and keeping it interesting to veterans of the series, according to my friend who was deeply familiar with it. Frankly, the best part of it by far for me were the special effects. The dramatic climaxes of the show include very impressive and smooth automated effects that are truly theatre of the spectacle.
