'Father Mother Sister Brother' Costumes: Using Red, Tom Waits' Hoodie

variety.com: Jim Jarmusch‘s “Father Mother Sister Brother,” now in theaters, is made up of three very different segments, each with a notable cast discussing the nature of their family relationships. One thing they have in common is a specific color: A deep red, the color of a jammy merlot, is a throughline that appears in each character’s contemporary clothing.

I loved reading about the process of the costuming for this film. Without having seen the show, it seems like the red acts a symbol for familial connection between all the characters. I thought that was sweet, especially since all the characters are estranged, in some way, from their parents. Their costumes, and characters, are extremely different in texture, style, and type of clothing. This signals how different they are in character and in the lives they lead. Yet the red, and their blood relation, ties them together.
I watched the trailer to this film and thought it was pretty funny and realistic. I especially loved the line “you can choose your friends, and your lovers, but you can’t choose your family.” I’ve read a bit about the idea of a blood family, versus a “chosen family,” which is the opposite idea. I’ve always felt that a blood family is hard to stray from, an idea I think this film echoes. You make the effort to stay because of love, and the duty you feel, despite all the awkward comments (like when the mother in one of the scenes said “we seem to be accidentally color coordinated. How embarrassing!”) and misaligned personalities.
