As MTV Goes Away, So Does the Global Stage That Made Artists Like David Bowie Icons
collider.com: Alongside many other vital pieces of ‘80s and ‘90s memorabilia, MTV has officially rung its bell. While its main channel, famously housing reality shows and reruns, will continue to operate, all remaining 24-hour music-focused MTV channels (including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live) have ceased broadcasting globally as of December 31, 2025.

This subject was always one my parents constantly reminisce on whenever the topic of modern music is brought up. When I was younger, I would roll my eyes at how they consistently felt the need to remind me of what I “missed out” when one of the only ways they’d be able to discover pop music was through MTV. Hearing how music videos were so revolutionary in their youth was foreign to me as almost every music video I watched was easily accessible through youtube, rather than having to wait for it to air on network television. With that said, I now have a much greater appreciation for MTV in what it accomplished, especially after reading this article. I still think that music videos today are incredibly dominant in solidifying an artist’s visual identity, but I admit I partially agree with this article that it’s not as valuable, anticipated or grand as it was in the 80s and 90s. There are still many artists today who put immense effort into their music videos and gain respect and fame for it, and I think that those artists for that reason deserve to be highlighted. However, budget constraints are what stop many up and coming artists today and though MTV streamlined a process for music artists, despite budgeting constraints anyone can make a music video and gain popularity for it through social media and I think that’s overall a positive of today’s music industry.
