It shouldn’t come as a surprise that yet another IATSE union is on strike for better working conditions and pay. The film industry is notorious for long hours followed by very little pay, and so it’s nice to see that the animators at Vancouver’s ICON creative studio are taking a stand to help them fight for better rights. This article makes me wonder if there are more IATSE strikes to come soon because of continuing inflation and lowering wages. I hope that those who are fighting for better conditions at ICON get what they deserve and can create a union that protects them from layoffs and helps them with immigration paperwork. It’s nice to see that the union is open to helping people from all different backgrounds get the rights they deserve in their workplace. I am hopeful that for their sake this strike is quick and gets all of the desired outcomes. But the pessimistic side of me says that there will be more of these strikes happening in the future if the film industry doesn’t start changing their working conditions, and pay as well as creating strict laws about the use of AI in the workplace.
