Triple Threat

www.cmu.edu/engage: Multi-talented Carnegie Mellon University alumnus Nate Bertone is one of those people who meets success in each area in which he works. As a designer and director, he has created for world premieres of new plays, musicals and ballets across the country, but right now, he is focusing on his personal writing projects, and for good reason.

Seeing this article about Nate Bertone makes me SO SO SO HAPPY. I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like if there is ever a CMU Drama alum that is spoken about, it is mainly the Actors and MTs, but you don't particularly see DPs be talked about! The fact that I read
this article about a DP in the field doing the hands-on work that we all dream of doing is insane. I did some more research into Nate Bertone by taking a look at his website and further articles about him by CMU drama, and his work is incredible, he really is a triple threat and everything I aspire to be in the future. I also find it insane that he was still growing as a name in the industry during the pandemic. Being a director, scenic designer and playwright during the pandemic must have been so hard as there really are no solid opportunities to be doing that day in and day out during the pandemic.

Congratulations Nate Bertone, you did it! You are creating the art that you want to see in the world! Which it seems like for many people that isn’t always the case. It’s also a new goal in life to receive a mention in someone else’s acceptance speech. Something that I would be interested to talk to Nate and the actors about is how they are able to work on this show and make it emotionally sustainable. It seems the point of this production is a cathartic emotional release. But how can somebody working on the production be able to keep watching and working on it day after day after day without draining yourself. I'm currently working on Lear which touches on the complexity of relationships with parents, where you are in life and grief. Due to my own life, I'm sensitive to some of those topics. It’s not a big deal when I’m only working on the show for a few more weeks, but I wonder how one would deal if they were working on it for a few months instead.
