The Wonders Of Feedback: Sometimes All You Have To Do Is Ask...

ProSoundWeb: Remember, when it comes to feedback, squeals are bad, but information is good! Getting input on our audio work can help us figure out what's working as well as what might need improvement.

I really liked this and I think it is an important reminder we could all probably use more often. I think if I were to guess feedback is probably difficult for most people to hear. I know that most of the time I agree with the statement that we are often hesitant to ask others for feedback because we know we might not like the answer. However, I like that at the end they acknowledged that we do not always have to accept the feedback but it might be nice to hear what others have to say. I mean it is true that without feedback we might not know if our work is the best it could be. As a manager I often give a lot of feedback that is not always received well and sometimes I get feedback that I am hesitant to accept . I think this was a gentle reminder that feedback is not a personal attack on an individual but a gentle suggestion for improvement and that we cannot reach our full potential without it.

I really like this article! At first I was really confused whether or not they were talking about audio feedback, or feedback as advice on work you've done. In the foundations of drama class we had a really good discussion recently about the difference between a critique and criticism. I think this kind of applies here and it shows that there are times where feedback can be helpful and especially in the sound world or any part of theater it is important to continue to improve your craft. I also think it's awesome that the person who wrote this article asks the people who give them feedback on their sound work specifics about where they were sitting, what it sounded like Etc in order to better themselves. also another important thing is the fact they recognize that feedback can come at busy times and it's important to stay focused on your work and not let it get you down if someone thinks negatively of your work, but think of it as a way to improve or maybe someone's just being mean to you for no reason which does happen.

Getting feedback in any industry or area is a very important thing in my opinion, and while it is not always positive, it will almost always benefit the person receiving it in one way or another. I think this article had a great attitude toward it, and I especially liked the line "the value of this information often outweighs the 30 seconds or so it takes to ask a question and listen to the response." Many people (often myself included) are afraid to waste the time of someone else and think it won't matter in the long run, but the fact is that getting information from an unbiased point of view is almost vital to success. It is always good to ask for feedback, especially from a colleague or client, because they will either say you are doing great and will know you care about the quality of your work, or they will give you useful advice on a thing to change to make your work quality better.
