I just get so excited and warm-cozy inside when the holidays come around, and this article is a wonderful example of how training in a traditional theatrical role can be used in other areas of more personal interest. This article also shows that our training can be used to help improve your community. The lighting designer, Rob Long, got to create “Observing Light” using “images captured along Pittsburgh’s three rivers.” Not only did he get to do work within his profession, he also got to design a display for the people within his community. Often our work is not focused just on the people in our own communities and is seen by audiences from all over. Getting the chance to work on something that will brighten your community members’ day is a unique experience. As a stage manager and a former event coordinator, I hope to have the opportunity to coordinate events like this for my community when I am not working on shows.

As someone who is new to the city, it is really exciting to hear about all the activities and things there are to do over the holidays. As someone who does not have family here, I will really need to lean into holiday activities to keep my spirits up in my first winter. I really enjoyed reading this article because it highlighted one of the many performances/markets and activities to do in the coming months. I really love the idea that these lights are going to be a big event within the community. As I said as someone who is new here I really want a chance to get to know what the atmosphere is like here and I am really excited to be a part of the holidays here. I have always loved that the holidays (whichever ones you celebrate) seem to put people in better moods and I love how simple things like putting up lights in places they don't always go, or decorations on coffee cups can give you an extra boost of serotonin in your day.

Being new to Pittsburgh it is exciting to hear some of the events happening in Pittsburgh for the holidays. Especially since I do not have family in the area I’ll need to find some new activities and traditions to get me into the holiday spirit. I am excited to see the bridges join in the lighting up of Pittsburgh. It sounds like it's going to be a really beautiful addition to this event. I hope I get to see it, I am also very interested to see how the images are incorporated onto the 3 bridges. Additionally, I cannot wait for the holiday market and festivals coming up. The holiday block party also sounds like a blast, since I have never lived in a city before I have not had the opportunity to experience city life yet. Overall, I am very excited to be able to experience all these things in Pittsburgh.

Christmas isn’t something I would usually celebrate so full out, we would usually just give gifts to each other, but I absolutely love the Christmas Spirit. When I was younger, my sister and I would decorate our house with various lights, and decorate the Christmas tree, but in recent years, we haven’t really been doing much. I’ve always wanted to experience the Christmas spirit, and after reading this article, I’m really glad there’s so many opportunities that I can experience. The market sounds really fun, and also gives me a chance to explore Pittsburgh with my friends, as well as the ice skating rink, which I haven’t have any opportunities to visit. Looking at the list of vendors, I think I’ll have so much fun there looking at all the pieces and the things each vendor has to offer. While I’m not sure if I’ll have time to visit during the light up night, I would definitely make time to visit after classes are over.

I am so excited for this! Skating in downtown Pittsburgh is something I have done every year here, and it is something that truly makes Pittsburgh feel a lot more like home- especially being from California. I have never been to the light up night night, and reading this article I definitely want to be there this year. I tried going last year but ended up going a few days later instead, so it would be a blast to go on the day that ignites the month of festivities. The fact that for the first time, Pittsburgh's three Sister Bridges, the Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol, and Rachel Carson bridges, will be adorned with permanent LED light fixtures, debuting with a display titled "Observing Light" by artist and lighting designer Rob Long is suuper exciting. From a design standpoint, I definitely will be going now. I think that it is super cool that the design will reflect the rhythm and dynamic movements of the rivers.

I will be attending Light Up Night for the first time since moving to Pittsburgh in 2021. I am super excited to see what it is all about. I will be going with my boyfriend who is a Pittsburgh native which should make things extra fun. I have always enjoyed community events like this. It is cool that they’re lighting up so many bridges and some even for the first time. As LED lights become more and more industry standard it is fascinating to see what people decide to do with them. From my understanding, they don’t get hot, they don’t suck up nearly as much energy, and last longer than the more standard bulb. This is great news for a city trying to light up a few bridges for over a month. I am excited to see what kind of magic this event brings to the air of Pittsburgh. The holidays are known to soften hearts and bring joy to people and I for one could use a little joy.

Being new to Pittsburgh, I didn’t know this was a thing! It’s so exciting to me that they are lighting up the bridges, and makes me wonder more about the technical implications of that job, as well as how the process was for the designer to create. It was really fascinating reading about how he uses the ‘watery reflections’ from the river in his work. I’m from New York, and one of my favorite things about living in the city is being there around the holidays, as everyone seems to have lights up which really makes everything seem much more cheerful - and so I am excited that Pittsburgh is similar in their love for decorations! It is a little funny though that the Holiday Market starts even before Thanksgiving, though such seems to be the case in stores, so why not start the festivities with the market early? (Even though it’s a bit goofy, I’m excited as that means I could maybe go before I leave for winter break). Overall, these events were really cool to learn about and I’m excited to explore the city to experience them myself!
