At WordTheatre, Hollywood actors read little-known literature
Los Angeles Times: The actors were preparing for WordTheatre’s 20th anniversary celebration, taking place in L.A. on Thursday. The celebration in Southern California comes after separate 20th anniversary events in London and New York City throughout October. The organization brings together well-known actors from film, TV and theater to share dramatic readings of popular literary works.

This is really incredibly interesting. I am a big big fan of taking older literature that does not hold up in its entirety in the modern age or even from back then. I find the playing with conversations and dialogue to be so much fun, especially with the more antique writings. What this theatre is doing is very reminiscent of the way that people typically mess around with Shakespeare. Although there is admittedly more plot involved in the staging and acting of Shakespeare, I think that this kind of “death of the author” style of directing and and acting is incredibly important to keep the theatrical world feeling fresh and new. Especially when directors and actors skew the literature in the way of fast paced comedy. Banter that is interesting and fast and funny makes for some of the best theater, and broader entertainment viewing experiences. It keeps the audience engaged and invested in a way that a stereotypical dramatic reading would not.
