Natasha Lyonne Champions Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph at Power of Women
Variety: Natasha Lyonne is enjoying something of a career renaissance, and she’s attributing the undeniable success to her female friendships. As she took the stage at Variety‘s annual Power of Women event — on her birthday, no less — she toasted to her “community of women,” among them Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph, who have cheered on each other’s rise in Hollywood.

I fell in love with Natasha Lyonne the first time I watched Orange is the New Black. She is such a talented actress and comedian. I fell even more in love with her on my 6th watch through of Orange is the New Black, and even more when I watched her in Russian Doll. Her commitment to the character is something that is just so admirable. After watching Russian Doll, I got the chance to see her in a much earlier role when I watched the iconic But I’m a Cheerleader. It’s such an important queer movie and her performance is really legendary. It's so great to see her enjoy her career renaissance and credit it to her female friends and colleagues. It was touching to hear the story of her first time meeting Aidy Bryant, the advice she gave her about the ups and downs of life is very universally applicable.
I loved this, I feel as though it can be really important to have that community of women around you if you are a working woman (this applies to anyone – having the support of a community of those that are similar to you, in gender identity, race, etc…). Working in a male-dominated area in this industry has shown me the importance. Unfortunately, I have also encountered the opposite, women willing to tear each other down to get to “the top,” – which I find pointless. Having a community around you that understands your struggles or even just the way you approach a topic is so important and I believe that this importance will only grow stronger as I age in this industry. I find support in other women around me on almost a daily basis and the importance just cannot be understated, nobody else besides those similar to you will truly understand your POV on a certain situation…
