Meyer Sound Education Program Invests in the Future of Sound

LightSoundJournal.com: Education is central to Meyer Sound’s mission, and the global program is flourishing following a refresh this year offering new strategic partnerships, a robust schedule of in-person training classes, conference participation, and significant online content. “By reimagining the education program here at Meyer Sound, we’re really investing in the future of the industry and the future of sound,” says Training & Education Manager Robyn Bykofsky.

I think it's a great idea that different places are starting to reevaluate the way that they educate people on certain material. before I got to Carnegie Mellon I remember always disliking the way that sound design was utilized in shows, and thought that having things like sound effects or music or things that didn't necessarily need to be in the show is very very unnecessary, but when I came here and saw that people were designing sound to add to the production, rather than merely just making sure that they're able to check a box, it became much more meaningful to me and I now have a much larger appreciation for the work that goes into designing sound, as well as an understanding for the necessity of it . I think it's really great that people are starting to learn how to do new things in new ways, because the more we know about something, the more the the way it is being taught needs to develop.

I think that what Meyer Sound is doing is so cool, and I really hope I can get the chance to attend one of their programs someday. I feel like it’s not often you see a sound company that’s really invested in education as much as Meyer is here. The reach of Meyer’s program is impressive, too; I was surprised when I read where all of their seminars are going to be held, around the world. I do wonder a lot about how effective classroom training is in comparison to real-world experience, though. I’ve never taken any classes about how to mix or set up sound systems, for example, but I can do it all just fine because I’ve been doing it for a long time. Likewise, I know people who can remember anything they learn in a classroom but can’t apply the skills to the real world at all. I hope that hands-on training is an integral part of Meyer’s curriculum.
