Five Days In The Life

SoundGirls.org: We often are asked the question “What’s a normal day in your life in this industry?” Well, that’s a difficult question to answer because every day is so vastly different, and hardly anything goes as initially planned. As an example of this, I’ve taken the opportunity to write about my recent trip to France for work and the five days spanning that trip.

I love reading and talking to other people in the industry to see what their life is like because in the theatre world, each schedule and personal life can be vastly and incredibly different. This article was comical and enjoyable. It can be quite chaotic having a life in this industry just because we are so busy all the time. It’s very evident that the person who we got to follow five days in the life of has a busy life and career. One thing I didn’t like though was the use of the word “techie”. I’m a big stickler about this word because I feel like it diminishes our work. We are technicians. We don’t call the actors “acties”. And, because the woman we follow in the article was the only woman on the technical side, it just made the word techie feel even more diminishing…

I really love articles like this - and I’m a big fan of the fact that this article covers a couple days in the life, instead of just one. I really think it sets a bigger and fuller picture for the reader. It was interesting reading this article; I really appreciated the honesty that the author had about being a woman in the industry and in an all male crew, as well as about her profession and the details of what she did every day. I’ve always thought that an encore was one song. I guess it can be an entire show (this concept is wild to me). The lifestyle on the road that the author shows seems like a very busy one - landing and taking off in a plane within 5 days to another destination, seeing different countries and cities every few days. I appreciated how she gave advice throughout the article through her experiences.
