These production photos are. so. cool. The way the material the surface behind the band can be projected on so organically looks beyond cool. Before reading the full article my personal speculation about the manufacturing process of what looks like a large scale fiber curtain reminded me of a build I worked on recently in Stagecraft. After reading the article and finding out that these three separate surfaces are automated, I’d love to go looking for some videos and seeing how that movement looks. Just in general, there is so much thought and planning on how the VMD, lighting, sound, costume and scenic aspects work together to create a comprehensive, organic look. The Astera Titan Tubes were not a product I had heard of before reading this article and they seem like a cool piece of technology. I’d love to see a load-in or load out of a stop on this tour.

This looks absolutely incredible. Using the Astera Titan Tubes for the lighting of Björk is so absolutely on brand and so visually stunning in the tour. I had never really heard of Astera Titan Tubes before but after seeing them and reading up on them, they remind me very much of pixel tape and, even further, the specific lighting design of the tubes in Carnegie Mellon University’s 2022 production of The Preludes. I really like how highly variable and flexible these tubes are and how you can use them in so many different and very interesting ways. The examples used in the article remind me of pictures of microscopic flora and fauna that are all beautiful, ethereal, and absolutely terrifying. Like if you have ever seen pictures of protein creating DNA strands from RNA strands, that is exactly what it reminds me of. The movement provided by the Astera Titan Tubes is what sets these lighting fixtures apart from others I believe.
