'Air' Costume Designer Charlese Antoinette Jones on the Understated Side of '80s Menswear

www.esquire.com: It's easy to dismiss '80s menswear, what with all the parachute pants, headache-inducing patterns and Miami Vice tailoring. It is not, after all, a period that's remembered for its understatement. Which is exactly why Hollywood costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones made it her mission to highlight the era's subtler sartorial side in Ben Affleck’s latest film, Air.

I have not seen this movie yet, but I am planning on definitely going to see it when I’m back home. I wrote a comment within the last couple weeks about the Costume Designer Charlie’s Internet, Jones and specifically her attention to detail is what really impresses me. it’s so hard when you are given a film set during your period to just try and highlight all of the most notable books for that time. So the 80s we always view is very big and colorful one shoulder pads, big hair kind of outlandish Well in reality the early 80s from late 70s is very simple and something that’s more timeless somehow. We definitely had that introduction of some of the outlandish looks but that wasn’t the norm at the time. I actually just did a play that was set during the same time. And the costume design was kind of difficult because I had to explain to the directors why this is not the 80s that they’re used to, and rather more of the genuine 80s for especially if the early years.

I love the route that Charlize Jones decided to take when designing the costumes for the Air film. I definitely feel as though a lot of people have a one dimensional look at how 80s fashion was. However, it is very obvious that Jones conducted a lot of research and analyze a lot of the materials, color palettes, and just overall clothing of the 80s in order to establish to look for this show. It’s great that she paid attention to the fact that the movie or the time in which Michael Jordan signed to the Chicago Bulls was the early 80s. Meaning that they are still some 70s influence. A large factor to consider when designing for a “period” show. So I was very intrigued to learn that a lot of people weren’t wearing sneakers at that time because it is such a staple peace within many of today’s peoples attire. So her understanding of the lack of sneakers within this period definitely helped in showcasing the overall storyline of the movie.
