Thank You, Five: Backstage at Kinky Boots

Playbill: Everybody Say "Yeah!" The Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots returned to New York City this summer for an Off-Broadway run at Stage 42 with Callum Francis, who starred in the West End production at London's Adelphi and subsequently on Broadway and in Australia, again stepping into the role of Lola.

This small article was short, but very informative to read. Having never seen Kinky Boots, I loved looking at the behind the stage photos of this show. I had no idea that this production was returning back to New York City this summer off-broadway and I am so excited to hear about all that will happen with this show. I think it’s really cool that the star of this version of Kinky Boots will be the same actor, Callum Francis who starred in the West end production, broadway, and in australia. Having this actor as well as so many others who are tony-winning shows that this show will be very very influential in today’s society and moving to see. I hope I can go and see it next time I am in New York. I hope to hear more about this show in the future and see how it continue to grow.

Okay, I am such a geek when it comes to backstage looks at theater productions. I love to see all the different set-ups, branding, and work that happens backstage, especially on these larger shows. I think it’s really unique because each theater backstage space is different and therefore the setup has to be different. It is really intriguing, especially from a management stand point. I love that the show is going back to Off-Broadway. I was a little disappointed that the Stage Manager wasn’t listed with the team that was working on the show. However, besides looking at the actors, I really enjoyed looking at the wig set up in the background of most of these photos since this is such an incredibly wig heavy show and the hair in this show is so incredibly important. This was a really great way to advertise this show and certainly enticed me to want to go and see it in NY.

Unfortunately, I’ve never had the chance to see Kinky Boots life, but I’ve heard amazing things about it. My step sister’s family actually knows Billy Porter quite well, so they’ve all seen it. I love that Kinky Boots is returning for an off-broadway run, because in my eyes, off-broadway shows deserve so much more recognition. I really loved looking through the pictures taken by Heather Gershonowitz and getting a little glimpse into the backstage of the show. The costumes look amazing from what I can see in the pictures. This show would be so fun to costume because of all the glamour and sparkle, and most importantly, drag. Seeing drag in theatre is one of my favorite things, because they really go hand in hand as queer performance arts. The more I talk about this, the more I realize I do really need to see Kinky Boots. Hopefully I will have the chance soon.
