Stagehands At NYC’s Little Island Unionize With IATSE Local One

Deadline: Stagehands at New York City’s Little Island have voted unanimously to unionize with IATSE Local One. The 2.4-acre public park, which opened last year and is perched on columns above the Hudson River, employs 25 stagehands who work at its 687-seat amphitheater and outdoor performance space known as the Glade.

This is great news to hear. Unionization is growing ever more important, and thankfully, ever more popular. Workers are rallying to union across the country and it's good to hear that that hasn't passed by the theater industry. The Little Island's theater is just as much a theater space as any other theater and therefore, they deserve the same rights to unionize as any other theater. Theater technicians have very difficult (and sometimes dangerous) jobs. Unions allow us to stand up for our rights to good pay, good hours, and protections. Frankly, I'm surprised that up until now they have not been unionized. In this industry, it seems like unionization is considered so important. Most major commercial productions are unionized and for those productions, almost every worker must be part of the union. I am also hopeful that this means that in the future, the unions will grow stronger and become easier to join.
