Women Still Underrepresented Behind the Camera in Indie Film World
Vanity Fair: Despite making up over half of the country’s population, women are still underrepresented behind the camera in America’s independent film industry. According to the study “Indie Women: Behind-the-Scenes Employment of Women in U.S. Independent Film, 2021-22” released today by Dr. Martha M. Lauzen

Women are constantly underrepresented behind the scenes in the arts, film and theatre worlds. So it was not surprising to hear that women are still struggling in the industry now to make their voices known and express their ideas through their art form. Not surprisingly the women in Indie films struggle with finding a space to explore their art form in the industry because many women can be directors, or have executive roles but when it comes to media, sound or designing something for a film, very little women are able and have found a way to become part of the culture. I have found this new generation has become more diverse in the females in the industry and I am hopeful that this will change throughout all versions of the art forms. Even though it will take time and work to change the rhetoric, I am sure that there is a way to create a more welcoming space for women and non-gender binding people alike.
I clicked on this artcle because I have always been intrested in the statistics of women working behind the scenes. My mom has been in the tv business for over 20 years and started in the industry because she saw barley any women behind the scenes. She always says to me “ I wanted to go into tv because I saw all these men on the sidelines hold the cameras and I thought why arent women doing this”. I think this artcle is very intresting in the way they compare indie film statistics and feature film statistics. I feel like it is very important to compare different sides of media and the different jobs. I also feel like even though it is important to have female led projects and a female team that can not be the only way women are employed or included. Women need to be more involded in all projects in this industry.
