James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Cinematography Was Inspired by Madonna

IndieWire: Turns out James Cameron got some of his material from the “Material Girl” herself. The “Avatar” writer/director was inspired by Madonna’s microphone placement during her concerts and found himself “Hung Up” on the concept of staying close to actors during action sequences.

I think it is very intresting how two way different pop cultures figures madonna and avatar have connections. I feel like this actrcle show how important pop culture is and how it can inspire other art. These are two very different pop culture events and the way one used the other to inspire the other I feel is very cool. The article mentioned the use of technolgy of the camera for avatar being on the actors face while they moved. This use of technolgy is intresting in the way its always involving also the fact that is way orginated from Madonnas concert mic placement. How pop culture inspires people is very important. There are probaly thousands of storys like this about how current shows are inspirpired by the Audio Hepburn era. Pop culture is so important because it inspires other pop culture along the way and its is how we keep having art.

As a Madonna fan, wow what an attention grabbing headline that I didn’t really expect to read. This is a great reminder that inspiration can truly come from anywhere. I don’t think I’ve even noticed her mic placement but it’s really cool that someone had thought so deeply about it. Now thinking about the shots in the movie the correlation between the two totally make sense. I think this has inspired me to not just brush off little things that I might notice but rather question them and see how those observations can inform design choices. It’s interesting how that small thing made such a strong impact on the film itself and the overall vibe. It shows the audience another perspective and makes these alien like creatures a little more human. What would the movie be like if the cinematographer didn’t draw inspiration from Madonna and how would the film’s success be affected?
