$35 million gift to American Conservatory Theater means historic Geary Theater gets new name
Datebook: Audiences to American Conservatory Theater’s “Passengers” this week are walking into a theater with a new name, thanks to a $35 million anonymous donation, the largest single gift the theater has ever received from any source — individual, foundation, corporate or government.

The renaming of the Geary came as a bit of a surprise for me. My last two shows before the pandemic shut everything down were in the Geary. I’m glad to hear that they got the $35 million grant, and that they are planning on using it to update some older equipment, and other needed things. I just hope they use some of it to continue paying their staff a living wage in the Bay Area. There was a lot of restructuring happening in the company even before the pandemic. As a fellow I was aware of some of the financial problems that the company was having, and that they were cutting costs wherever they could. Even disbanding the fellowship program after my year (this was decided on before the pandemic). But with the cutting of the MFA program and the renaming of the Geary, it looks like a very different company. I just hope these changes end up helping ACT and not hurting them.
