Playbill: Dear Evan Hansen, winner of the 2017 Tony Award for Best Musical, plays its final Broadway performance September 18 at the Music Box Theatre. At closing, the production will have played 1,678 regular performances and 21 preview performances, making it one of the 50 longest-running shows in Broadway history.

I happened to have the misfortune? Fortune? Of getting introduced to musical theater right in the middle of the Hamilton-Dear Evan Hansen-Be More Chill-Heathers craze of the mid to late 2010s. This leads me to say that this show is part of why I wanted to do theater in the first place. I used to really love it back in those days. I still listen to it and I like it and it holds a very special place near and dear to my heart. I, however, also absolutely despise this piece of work and can confidently say that it was about time the show closed. Even overlooking its controversies and the unspoken negative impact it had on its young, impressionable, target audience, it also just not makes sense. Plot-wise, there are so many gaps and you end up walking out of there asking yourself why the main character was the villain all along.
Dear Evan Hansen was the first show I ever saw on Broadway (if you exclude me getting scared by the puppets, crying, and leaving Lion King after the opener when I was like 2 years old) and it holds a really special place in my heart. I have a very fond memory of waiting in line outside the Music Box to get my playbill signed and to meet the actors back in November of 2017. That was way before I knew that my career path would be in theater, so both myself and that show have come a long way since then. Of course the show is still on its 1st National Tour right now - with a mutual of mine Anthony Norman as Evan - so Dear Evan Hansen is not completely wiped off the map. It is still bittersweet though and I hope everyone who worked on that show has great things in store.
