Pittsburgh Opera’s ‘Rusalka’ Opens 84th Season in Grand Style

onStage Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh Opera opened its 84th season Saturday evening, with a truly grand performance of Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka. The libretto, by Jaroslav Kvapil, is said to have been inspired by various Czech folklorists, and/or Hans Christian Andersen, with the latter some times given more credit, due to “The Little Mermaid” resemblance to the opera.

I have never seen an opera live, and it is one of my goals for this year. I’m sad that there are only 3 more performances of this opera, because it seems like one I would enjoy but am too busy to attend. This reviewer speaks highly of the singing, talent, acting and music of this opera and it is exciting to see someone have such high regards for a new opera that hasn’t been seen at the Benedum Center here in Pittsburgh. The pictures attached to this article showcase a show that is unlike any other, full of bright colors and beautiful costumes. I can only imagine how wonderful everything is together. The history behind this opera is intriguing and I am hopeful that more theatre companies will put on this opera in the future. I am excited to keep up to date with this news collection so that I know what is happening and performing around Pittsburgh and hopefully I can see some of them too.
